2-Day Kratie Mekong Adventure (Cycling, Homestay & Kayaking)

Do a loop around Kratie; enjoy the smiles and greetings from all the children in the villages. Shift gears and cycle along the picturesque Mekong River through rural countryside and villages, stopping for hearty meals and refreshing drinks along the way. We spend the first day on the west bank from Prek Prolung to Vatanak. Along the way, we visit Wat, farms, rice noodle production and swim in the Mekong clear water in season. Overnight stay in a local family home who live on the bank of the Mekong River and taste traditional meals. On the second day, enjoy a full day kayaking downstream through flooded forests and stop the dolphins at Kampi.

What to Bring:
Flashlight, sun hat, sunblock, sunglasses, insect repellent, small towel and swim wear, sturdy walking shoes/sport sandals, shorts, long trousers, shirts/T-shirts, waterproof clothes for wet season May-Oct, camera and film, first-aid kit (should contain lip salve, aspirin, band aids, anti-histamine, Imodium or similar tablets for mild cases of diarrhea, re-hydration powder, extra prescription drugs you may be taking)
Day 1West Bank of the Mekong & Homestay (-/L/D)
We start our day at 8:30 AM by cycling south out of Kratie on the Old River Road towards Te River. Along the way we pass through a Vietnamese and Wat Rokakandal; a unique 400 years old wood carving on the roof of this temple gives you a good photo shot. As we wait for the ferry we can enjoy looking over to a floating village on the Mekong. Having arrived on the west bank, we will visit attractions such as tobacco building, seasonal crops, Wat; learn how palm sugar is being produced in the season and relax alongside beautiful rice paddies, the perfect opportunity for photos. We might be able to try some delicious, freshly pressed sugar cane juice, A must for those with a sweet tooth. We spend a lunch break in a local family’s home. As our cycling tour continues further and further through many rural villages, villagers especially kids are friendlier. Great smiles with the greeting word “HELLO! HELLO!” they look to you like famous people or people of the day. There are opportunities to see local productions such as rice whiskey and rice noodles; stop for refreshing drinks along the way; relax and refresh your body with a swim at a secret and beautiful Mekong beaches rewarded by many Mekong green Islands in season (January-May). In the evening, we will be welcomed in another family who lives on the bank of the Mekong River for an overnight stay and served an evening meal. You will experience true rural Cambodian life by meeting local’s family with a personal touch; taste a portion of traditional Cambodian food. Tonight, you will have an overnight stay in a traditional Cambodian home under a mosquito net at one of the local families who live on the bank of the Mekong River, experience bucket shower like Khmer people. •
Note: During the dry season (January – May), there is an option to relax and cool your body in the fresh and clear water at the famous Kampi Rapid Resort. Please let us know if you are vegetarians. • Cycling distance: 30 km
Day 2Dolphin watching by kayak and local productions. (B/L/-)
Rise early for sunrise over flooded forests of the mighty Mekong River then enjoy rice noodle soup. After an early breakfast, we take a local ferry across the Mekong River the east bank before we start our kayaking tour starts from Sandan where we will paddle across the river towards the west bank of the Mekong, then downstream through sand islands and the flooded forest, before crossing back and enjoying the unique perspective of seeing the rare Irrawaddy dolphins from your kayak. This is the best way to observe these rare mammals at their natural habitat as we don’t disturb them with the noise of motorboat or anything. We can make some stop for swimming and of course photograph.
** The dry bag will be supplied so you can bring you phone and camera.
Lunch break at Kampi before we continue our cycling to down south to traditional rice noodle making at Sambok. Then, visit walking top of Sambok Mountain for a view on the countryside. Before, we reach Kratie we visit one of the brick factories and maybe rice wishkey production. Back to Kratie town around 4:30 pm.
