At 8:00 AM, our expert guide will meet you up in hotel foyer or anywhere in town. Then, escorts you on this full day excursion to discover the remote jungle temples of Koh Ker, Perng Kamnou and Beng Mealea. The journey takes two and a half hours through the countryside, past beautiful rice paddies and villages with traditional houses.
Koh Ker was an ancient capital city of Cambodian empire since the 10th century, established in the reign of king Jayavarman IV, the site currently is remoted and dense of jungles. Koh Ker is one of the fourth UNESCO World heritage sites listed including Angkor Wat in 1992, Preah Vihear in 2008, Sambor Prei Kuk in 2017 and Koh Ker in 2023.
Once we have arrived, we begin our guided tour to reveal Koh Ker temples complex. We first visit the suffocating strangler figs covered on Prasat Bram temples. Continue on to Prasat Thom, a seven-storey step pyramid stands out in the midst of lush jungle. After reaching the top, you will see the great panoramic view of the surrounding terrain and areas. The same ground visit Prasat Krahom or Red Temple.
After having lunch at local restaurant, we explore more of this vast complex such as the five towers of Prasat Lings, a fertility symbol and other ruined temples (Prasat Chen, Prasat Andong Kuk, Prasat Sralau, Krachap temple, Prasat Banteay Pi Choan, Damrei Kandoeng, Ktum Temples and Prasat Neang Khmau)
Afterward, drive back to Perng Kamnou, a hermitage and the large scattered natural stone blocks carved as Hindu sculptures in the 11th century. This site located on the foot of Kulen Mount, east of Svay Leu district. On arrival, we trek uphill about twenty minutes to reach those beautiful carvings on sandstone boulders.
We head back to Beng Mealea, and along the way make a quick stop at the nearby river which was once used as a sandstone quarry. You can see where the ancient Khmer cut out sections of the sandstone which was used to construct some of the ancient Angkor temples.
Next, explore an unrestored overgrown temple of Beng Mealea – built in the reign of King Suryavarman II in the 12th century, the style of the temple is very similar to Angkor Wat and many of the carvings look the same. Unbelievable! The forest has run riot on the temple building and it is hard to get a sense of the monument’s shape amid the daunting ruins. After exploring all fascinating sites, drive back to Siem Reap where your tour ends.
